A letter to Apple

15 October 2008 6 Comments

iMac reflectionsToday Apple released the new Macbook and Macbook Pro lines of laptops. They are nice, but seem to miss something fundamental for anyone sitting for more than 5 minutes looking at their laptops: matte screens.

The glossy screens are very bad for your eyes. The reflections distract and glaring sunlight make the screen almost unwatcheable. Not only every smudge or reflection draws immediate attention, but when pair programming you’re constantly face-to-face with your fellow software developers.

I’m currently happy with my Macbook Pro with matte screen, but I’d like to secure my upgrade path. My early 2006 iMac is currently not upgradeable because of the glossy screens.

Apple, please bring back the regular matte screens!

I have an iMac with a glossy screen, and it’s probably the best screen I’ve ever had, the colours are strong and vibrant enough to avoid the glossyness being a problem, although I can see how it would be a problem if the screen wasn’t as bright.

However, I’m mostly disappointed with the fact that they still persist with 1440×900 resolutions for their 15″ MBP’s. Common, it’s the 21st century! Even $500 budget laptops of that form factor have 1680×1050 resolution screens. The lack of proper resolution for a laptop that big is a big show stopper for me, and it makes the regular Macbook look more enticing not only on price.

    Hi Wille,

With a stationary iMac you can regulate the lighting conditions (in most cases). I like to take my Macbook everywhere I go, even outside. But I can’t see anything with a glossy screen in full sunlight.

Inside, I mostly dim the screen to minimal brightness, which is easier on the eyes. Maybe I should start wearing sunglasses for regular computer work ;-)

Think there should be a choice of matte screens. The previous Macbook Pro had that choice.

Agree with you on the resolution argument. I remember two years ago seeing a (high-end) laptop with 1920×1080 resolution. Macbook Pro’s are top of the line, with their price, features and design. They surely should deliver a higher resolution than this.

Don’t really care about Mac, but as a software developer, glossy is the way to go for sure. No longer do I suffer from eye fatigue looking at those matte grainy screens, contrast and color is also much better. Having said that, Apple is all about making the choices for you, if you are not satisfied, go somewhere else – I seriously think they couldn’t care less.
